During the first years of the nineteenth century, most cases of insanity occurred in male patients; hence, Jekyll's downfall was always a man.According to Jekyll, he has an inborn intellect that manifests itself when he is in his sanity. It is part of this intellectual capacity that lets him see and understand what others do not. For Jekyl l, it is part of his gift to see and sense what is happening around him and make decisions that cause the greater good.However, Jekyll began to lose that gift at a young age. In 1819, at the age of eighteen, he found himself playing poker with fellow physicians and losing all his money after gambling on two cards that had no value.On another occasion, he gambled away a sum of money on an ancient game called Pars Solitaire, which involved a computer, and a brain that operated according to that person's psychology. Jekyll claims that he can only afford to lose enough money at one time to cover one and a half fingers, and he managed to lose that sum. However, a friend had recommended that he try out gambling on that computer game, because he would win a lot of money if he did so.Jekyll believed that he had reached his end, and began trying to avoid anyone or anything that would remind him of his past life. He also stopped listening to his physicians. In 1831, Dr. Jekyll wrote about the end of his insanity:Jekyll eventually came across some weird stories that filled his mind with terror. He could not understand why a man would have to be mentally insane to become a doctor, as he is trained to heal the sick. Because of this, he also went to work with his colleagues and produced the stories that would bring him down and make him an inspiration for other psychologists and psychiatrists.Through his stories, Jekyll established himself as a serious author and is still considered by many to be one of the most important Victorian writers. He died at the age of thirty-three, from tuberculosis. His books and stories would inspire many writers, including Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, and Anthony Trollope.
